The Groenkloof Nature Reserve, just five kilometres outside Pretoria, is Africa’s very first game sanctuary and still a beloved green escape for locals. Set within 600 hectares of bushveld, it’s ideal for self-drives, picnics, hiking, or tackling the rugged 14-kilometre 4×4 route. The reserve is teeming with wildlife, from zebra and giraffe to kudu, jackals, ostriches, and blesbok – all fairly relaxed around vehicles, so you can often get surprisingly close.
